Add Product is a two-step form for adding a single custom product — one that isn't in RxShelf's master drug database. For most products, searching the Drug Database is faster because the identity fields come pre-filled. Use manual add for one-offs.
Open the form
Sidebar: Inventory → Add Product. At the top of the page you'll see quick links to the other add paths — Search drug database and Import CSV / Excel — in case this isn't the right path for your use case.
Step 1 — Identity
Fields depend on the product type.
Drug
- Product type — Drug.
- Name — the brand name (e.g. Emzor Paracetamol).
- Generic name — the active ingredient (e.g. Paracetamol).
- Strength — e.g.
500mg. - Dosage form — tablets, capsules, syrup, cream, injection, etc.
- Pack size — units per pack.
- Card size — units per blister strip (leave blank for liquids/bottles).
- Unit of measure — tablets, capsules, ml, sachet, etc.
- NAFDAC number.
- Manufacturer.
- SKU (optional) — your internal reference.
Consumable
Consumables (syringes, cotton wool, gloves, gauze, etc.) skip the drug-specific fields:
- Product type — Consumable.
- Name.
- Strength / spec — e.g.
5mlfor a syringe. - Unit of measure.
- Manufacturer.
- SKU (optional).
Click Continue.
Step 2 — Defaults and classification
- Category (required) — pick from the list, or click the
+button to create a new category inline. Categories are per-pharmacy — you own the taxonomy. - Reorder level — defaults to 10. When stock drops below this number, the product shows up in low-stock alerts.
- Default markup % — the retail markup applied by default at Restock. You can override it per batch when receiving stock. Optional.
- Default wholesale markup % — same, for wholesale sales. Optional.
- Notes — any internal note about this product.
Click Add product.
What "uniqueness" means
Duplicate detection uses different fields for drugs and consumables:
| Product type | Uniqueness tuple |
|---|---|
| Drug | generic name + brand name + strength + dosage form + pack size + manufacturer |
| Consumable | name + strength + unit of measure + manufacturer |
Two products that match on those fields are duplicates. If you try to add one that already exists, RxShelf flags it and asks whether to skip or merge.
What happens after saving
The product appears in your inventory with zero stock. Adding a product is completely separate from stocking it — no cost price, no selling price, no batch number, no expiry is captured on this form. Those live on individual batches created via Stock In.
Next steps
- Stock in a batch — record cost, selling price, batch number, and expiry for a shipment.
- Adding many at once? See the onboarding overview for the Drug Database and CSV import paths.
